Selecting a tile for your ENTIRE home might be one of the most daunting tasks when it comes to designing your dream home. I mean, it’s going in your entire place, and you want it to look PERFECT.
I was so proud of my husband, because we stopped at THREE…3! different flooring stores before ultimately selecting our flooring tile.
Here’s my advice –
Don’t go in there blind. Scan good ol’ Pinterest and get a good idea of the colors you’re looking for (or ones that you can eliminate) right off of the bat. Flooring stores generally are HUGE and it could be immediately over-whelming to walk in without having any idea on what you’re looking for.
Know your material. This kind of piggy-backs off of #1, so not only should you know what colors you want, but what MATERIAL are you looking for? Ceramic tile, porcelain tile, vinyl flooring, real wood flooring…? so. many. options.
Bring home some options. Lighting in flooring stores is awful, you need to select 2-4 samples and ask them to bring them home. I promise you, that one you LOVED in the flooring store will look so different once you get it home and see it in your lighting. Flooring stores can be a little weird about letting go of their prized flooring samples and may require a deposit – that is totally normal, and totally worth it.
Don’t over complicate it. It is so easy to think into things because like I said, it’s such a big task – but you will end up making your decision so much harder if you over complicate it. Once you have a few selections sitting at home, and you’re able to eliminate some options right off of the bat…sleep on it and in the morning, make your selection. You have to remember ALL of them will look completely fine in your new home, and NO ONE else will remember the one that had a “little too much gray” in it. I promise!
Installation costs too! When selecting your tile or flooring option – remember that you still need to account for installation – which can tack on another $3-$4 per sq ft. If you pick the larger flooring tiles, or want crazy patterns – installation costs will sky rocket. So if you’re trying to keep your flooring tile selection budget friendly, keep the size small and crazy design patterns to a minimum.

We ultimately selected a wood-look porcelain tile, Altier beige 9×48] after building a few homes, and learning a few lessons with real wood floors, there isn’t anything better and more durable in my opinion. It has a nice texture to it, and looks so much like real wood floors. Can’t wait to show you guys the final product!
All the best in your new construction journey,
Emily
